Origins & Marconi
The history of SIRM Italia is directly linked to Guglielmo Marconi who, by completing the theoretical discoveries on electromagnetic waves by Maxwell and Hertz, turned the radio into a practical, functioning technology usable on a large scale, especially for long-distance and maritime communications.
The company was born from this pioneering experience in maritime radiocommunication. In this context, we also mention SIRM UK (part of the aforementioned Holding), also founded in 1900 when Marconi created the 'Marconi International Marine Communications Company', from which Marconi found the technical inspiration to found the Italian SIRM.
1927: The Foundation
In 1927, with Law No. 1082 of June 16, the Marconi International Marine Communication Company was reorganized into Società Italiana Radio Marittima (SIRM), becoming the first licensed company for the management of onboard radio-electric services in Italy.
The main objective was to manage radio-electric services for Italian ships, ensuring safety and commercial communications at sea. In the years following its foundation, SIRM became a reference point for radio telecommunications on Italian vessels, at a time when radio was the key technology for maritime safety.
Today: SIRM Italia
After further evolutions and management transitions, it arrived, under the name SIRM Italia, under the management of the HYA Holding, which consolidates its past and lays the foundations for a market positioning worthy of what its primary creator achieved a century ago.
Today, SIRM Italia, authorized as an Accounting Authority (AAIC) for the management of maritime communication services according to international regulations, continues to operate as a specialized company in maritime telecommunications, navigation, safety, and ICT for merchant ships and other naval segments, with offices in Italy and a global technical assistance network.
"Over a century of history that continues into the future of maritime digitalization."
